Rewards and Recognition

Grants and Awards

A number of grants and awards are available to University of Melbourne staff who demonstrate excellence in the areas of teaching, support for teaching service to students and mentoring.

Each year, teachers at the University of Melbourne are among the recipients of a number of Australian Awards for University Teaching which recognise their efforts in teaching excellence, programs that enhance learning and their outstanding contributions to student learning. The University also rewards staff for excellence in teaching and supervision through annual internal awards.

Detailed information on University and National awards is available from the Centre for the Study of Higher Education website. Information about University funding or grants to support teaching and learning can also be accessed from the Melbourne Students and Learning website.

Development and promotion

Staff development and promotion at the University of Melbourne also acknowledges the importance of excellence in teaching and supervision. University policy on academic confirmation and promotions requires staff to provide evidence of their effectiveness as teachers.

In assessing contribution to teaching and learning, applicants must provide evidence of the scope of their activities (such as their discipline area or to staff development activities), as well as evidence of teaching impact and reputation (including systematic evaluation of teaching).

In addition to academic distinction in an international environment, promotion to professorial level is also an acknowledgement of exceptional leadership in teaching, including guiding and assisting more junior staff in developing their capacity for teaching and research.

Promotion to professorial level is determined by the Senior Appointment and Promotions Committee (SAPC).
